Analysis of rāga Bēhāg in Karnāṭaka Music - with special reference to Tillānā-s of Lalgudi G. Jayaraman and M. Balamuralikrishna
The rāga repertoire in Karnāṭaka Music has evolved through various influences over time, with Hindustāni music being a significant contributor. Several Hindustāni rāga-s have been assimilated into Karnāṭaka Music over the centuries, one such example being rāga Bēhāg. The melodic framework of many rāga-s in Karnāṭaka Music has been primarily established through compositions, particularly Kṛti-s. Additionally, some borrowed rāga-s have been shaped through other compositional forms, such as Tillānā-s. Notably, Lalgudi G. Jayaraman and M. Balamuralikrishna have explored rāga Bēhāg through their Tillānā-s, presenting a distinct interpretation that differs from the Hindustāni rāga Bihāg. This study aims to qualitatively examine and analyse these Tillānā-s, with a particular focus on the adaptation of rāga phrases in their compositions and performances.
