Laws for Musicians in Ancient India
This paper examines social laws governing performers and musicians in ancient India through texts such as Kautiliya Arthashastra, Samarangana Sutradhara, and Sutra texts, i.e. ancient Indian social law books such as Manu Smriti, Yājñavalkya Smriti, Nārada Smriti, Bṛhaspati Smriti, and Kātyāyana Smṛti. In this context, the paper comments on the social status of musicians in ancient India.
