In this issue, we explore the evolving contours of gender and pedagogy within the realm of Bharatanāṭyam, alongside a critical spotlight on a pioneering contribution to Karnataka's musical heritage. The article "Intersection of Gender and Pedagogy in Bharatanāṭyam" engages with the nuanced dynamics of cross-gender teaching practices and questions the traditional binaries in dance training, offering perspectives on creating more inclusive learning spaces within classical frameworks. Complementing this contemporary inquiry is the article on ಗಾಯಕ ಶಿಕಾಮಣಿ ಡಾ. ಎಲ್. ಮುತ್ತಯ್ಯ ಭಾಗವತ‌ರ್ ಅವರ ಕೃತಿ ವಿಶೇಷತೆ, which revisits the enduring musical legacy of the distinguished composer and teacher, Dr. L. Muthayya Bhagavatar. Through an in-depth examination of his compositions, the study reflects on the pedagogical and aesthetic values embedded in his work, thereby bridging tradition and innovation. Together, these contributions aim to deepen our understanding of both progressive practices and rich legacies in the field of Indian performing arts.

The first article, “Āhārya Abhinaya in Bharatanatyam: Aesthetic Dimensions and Performative Relevance,” examines the significance of costumes, ornaments, makeup, and stage properties in enhancing expression and enriching the visual appeal of dance. It highlights how external adornments become powerful tools in communicating rasa and elevating the overall performance experience. The second article, “Aesthetics and Philosophy of Characterization in a few chosen Bhakti works of Rāmāyaņa – Dancer’s Perspective,” explores the interpretative depth of characters from Bhakti literature. It reflects on how philosophy and devotion are embodied in performance, allowing dancers to portray characters with sensitivity, authenticity, and spiritual resonance. Together, these studies emphasize the interplay of aesthetics, philosophy, and performance in Bharatanatyam.

It examines Sattriya Nritya through a gendered perspective, focusing on the relationship between self, body, and identity within a devotional framework. Dance is viewed as a medium of spiritual practice, social meaning, and performative agency. The issue also analyzes Muttuswami Dikshitar’s Pancha Bhootha Linga Kshetra kritis as manifestations of sonic theology, linking musical form with elemental cosmology and sacred space. Carnatic music is positioned as a vehicle of metaphysical and aesthetic inquiry. Further, reflections drawn from Bhāruta Stūpa sculptures offer insights into ancient Indian musical practices and performance culture. Visual art is treated as an important historical source for understanding early sound traditions. Overall, the issue emphasizes interdisciplinary approaches across dance studies, musicology, philosophy, and art history, reinterpreting classical traditions through contemporary scholarly perspectives.
